Facilitated by:
Sierra Hicks (They/Them) is an AuDHDer and PhD Student in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment at Cornell. Sierra has been a Neurodiversity Ambassador for the past couple of years and is passionate about celebrating, analyzing, serving overlapping identities and experiences.
Guest speaker:
- Rebecca McCabe, PhD Candidate at Cornell University, Co-Founder & President of the Student Neurodiversity Alliance at Cornell.
In this session, Rebecca McCabe
will talk about the historic harms, current threats, and potential future
concerns of academic research on neurodivergence, especially autism. She will
also talk about the need to engage in community-based, participatory research
and the AASPIRE framework as a solution. Researchers should also pay attention
to the research priorities of the neurodivergent community. Finally, Rebecca
McCabe will describe our experience with participatory research on
neurodiversity at Cornell.
This session is especially interesting for researchers
interested in or already conducting research on neurodiversity-related themes.
Neurodivergent people can learn about ways to interact with researchers and
institutions to advocate for ethical research that is respectful of the
neurodivergent identity, experiences, and needs.
