A symposium celebrating the great women in science at Cornell was held May 5, 2016 at Mann Library, featuring short talks by women at all career stages: Allison Pei, undergraduate student, Clark Lab; Sarah Sander, postdoctoral associate, Clark & Barbash Lab; Nozomi Nishimura, assistant professor of biomedical engineering; and Laura Harrington, professor of entomology. The event kicked off the opening of a new library exhibit by Juliet Jacobson '16 honoring alumna and scientist Barbara McClintock (BS 1923, MA 1925, PhD 1927).
McClintock discovered transposable elements in the 1940s, but was met with so much skepticism that she stopped publishing her work. Scientists later confirmed McClintock's finding, landing her a Nobel Prize 40 years after her discovery.
